Goldburgers in Newington, CT
A visit to the Wadsworth Atheneum for the Coney Island exhibit got us hankering for a hot dog so we headed to Newington. Goldburgers had been on our radar for a while, but we hadn’t had the chance to get up there to see what the hoopla was all about! A rather non-descript storefront had us questioning our decision, but that changed the minute we stepped inside. A lineup of freshly made mustards and a bottle of Siracha on the counter, a cooler of Mexican Coke and Fanta (real sugar, no high fructose gunk!), plus local ginger and root beer, was a very good sign. This place is KNOWN for it’s unbeatable freshly ground hamburgers stacked with everything from potato chips and housemade pickles, to blue cheese and skinny fried onion strings. Me, I couldn’t resist a “Pig in a Quilt”, a Mucke’s dog wrapped in a layer of house-baked sourdough with a Yuengling-caraway mustard dip. It was hot dog heaven for the girl who never turns down a Pig-in-a-Blanket! The weenie topped with jalapeno-studded sauerkraut was newsworthy, too. These guys are super serious about fast food done well, with local ingredients and a variety of entirely housemade condiments and secret sauces. Not an order went out without a stack of fried macaroni and cheese squares (what’s not to like?), but don’t pass up the fries: fresh cut daily, soaked, blanched and fried to order. Grab a few of Tim’s Cookies on the way out…these Momofuko-inspired treats are an amalgam of marshmallow, chocolate chips, potato chips and who knows what, but they’re that perfect combo of crispy, chewy, sweet and salty. “Like” their facebook page to find out about pop-up dinners featuring kooky themes like dorm night (grass-fed beef sliders, house hot pockets featuring Eddy Farm pork loin and Cator Corner cheese, bacon and egg ramen). They give their creative juices free reign at these special events and at summer farm dinners a block away at Eddy Farm.
