Pearls and Plaid, East Haddam
Caroline, the twenty-two year old owner of Pearls and Plaid, reminds me a little of myself at her age. I had my own store, too (as a senior in college! What was I thinking??), so there’s nothing I like better than encouraging entrepreneurial spirit in a young woman. The sweet little building behind 4 Norwich Road houses her charmer of a shop (big plus, there’s parking!), filled with the sort of goodies that appeal to mother/daughter shopping jaunts. Lots of little dresses and tunics under $50, plenty of scarves and on-trend earrings under $20. Candles, journals, mugs and gifts make up the rest of the inventory and it’s all so cheap and cheerful, you’ll be hard-pressed to walk away empty handed. The actresses at the last show at Goodspeed were so taken with her picks that she’s racing to the post office daily to mail her new fans boxes of cute sweaters and boho tunics. Her mission is to find current fashion at easy price points and her vision is Northern Prep meets Southern Charm. It works. Currently open Wednesday thru Saturday, check her facebook page for hours and updates.
