When we bought our house in Lyme, that’s all there was — a charmer of a Cape, all by its lonesome, bereft of a garage, barn or outbuilding. Then we spent the next nine years arguing over where exactly to build the barn (they’re not called garages in this neck of the woods). Attaching it to the house to avoid a long distance grocery schlep was my preference. A free-standing structure, with a man-cave for bike maintenance and storage, was my husband’s. I usually win this sort of argument, simply because he doesn’t care enough about house decisions concerning wall color, kitchen counters or bath tile. This time though, he wasn’t budging, and we are so much the better for it. Read on for a short history of our new barn.
p.s. The image is a vintage bike wheel fashioned into a window for the bikeroom. Genius!
