The Perfect Pants at The Hil
by Carolyn Milazzo
I think I may have stumbled on the perfect pair of black pants. In fact, I know I did because I love them so much I bought another pair in navy blue (one of Erica’s style rules —when it’s perfect, buy two) and I rue the day they’re in the wash. I knew I had to have them the moment I slipped them on in the dressing room at The Hil in Guilford, a small boutique tucked next to Ashley’s Ice Cream on Route 1 in Guilford. They slid on with no tugging, deep-knee bends, or prayers that they would look better once I got them home. Sold.
Known at The Hil as the “perfect pant,” the “Lara” is an ingenious mix of cotton, nylon, and spandex and are so comfortable and stretchy you could do a yoga class in them (in fact, I did). No buttons or clasps on the waistband accommodate “fat days” and the slim leg is perfect for tucking into a pair of over-the-knee boots or booties. Heading out on the town? Pair them with heels and you’re good to go. Unlike leggings which can show every nook and cranny, these are a substantial Ponte fabric, so no worries about pesky lines, plus they’ve kept their shape and stretch through several launderings. Best of all is the price: $56 a pair.
Affordability mixed with the hottest fashion trends is owner Hilary Catala’s goal. The 37-year-old mother of four was selling clothes from her home near the Guilford Green for three years before opening up her boutique, which she says attracts everyone from high school students to grandmas. And we can see why. On a recent visit, the inventory of oversized tops, cozy sweaters, and skinny bottoms, organized in color stories, is exactly what we want to wear this fall. Oh, and everything is under $100.
“Perfect Black Pants” also available in olive (above) and navy.
