Cate’s Sew Modern, Madison
My mother’s ancient turquoise Singer sewing machine sits gathering dust in the basement. My husband always threatens to throw it out, but I won’t let him. An expert seamstress, she could whip me up a new outfit in an evening. Somehow this talent did not get passed down; I can stitch a hem or sew a button, and that’s about it. But a new sewing shop in Madison could have me dragging out that relic. Cate’s Sew Modern is a stitcher’s dream. Filled with fabrics you can’t find anywhere around here, like lovely Rifle Paper Co.’s Alice and Wonderland collection, or simple and understated linens and chambrays, textile hounds will love rifling through the racks here. The day I visited the place was abuzz with happy shoppers and stitchers, and a kids camp session was just getting started. Sew Modern offers all kinds of classes, workshops, and parties, from School of Sewing to Intro to Quilting and Open Sew Wednesdays. Me, I’ll be heading to Meet Your Maker, where I can schlep in my old Singer and finally learn how to use it!
