Gorging at Grass and Bone, Mystic
We’ve been (literally) chomping at the bit for Grass and Bone. This new butcher shop-slash-eatery is brought to us by the famed folks behind Oyster Club and Engine Room. So you KNOW we had high expectations when we navigated 95 for lunch the other day. Happy to find a parking lot right in front (an unusual thing in Mystic), I queued right up at the counter. I was not the only one excited about this opening. All sorts of tempting sandwiches made from grass-fed, local meats and farm-fresh sides are on the menu, but I couldn’t get past that golden rotisserie chicken, spinning temptingly in the case. I ordered half an organic bird plus fat-roasted potatoes and sea-salted tomatoes and grabbed a seat at a communal table. That chicken! It was all I could do to save half for later (the portion is crazy for lunch), and, in my book, there is nothing better than fresh-from-the-farm sides, bursting with summery flavor. (Produce is from Stonington’s Stone Acre Farms).
The team here is driven by excellence, and it shows. And this is exactly how I want to eat: the best local ingredients, simply prepared. Next time I’ll dig into one of the stunning sandwiches that kept passing me by: hand-carved roast beef with local Melville cheese, or roast pork with smoked ricotta on Farm to Hearth bread, plus mac and cheese or farro salad on the side. Oh, and that hot cornbread with maple butter? Ridiculous. On my way out, I ordered another roasted chicken to go and some thick cut pork chops for my husband. I only wish I had thought to fill my freezer with organic pork belly and skirt steak! It is so worth the trip to Mystic to get this level of quality. I’ll be back ASAP.
Eat in or take out, sandwiches, salads and rotisserie chicken, plus a full butcher shop with a butcher on premises and parking lot in front. Cider, wine, Foxon sodas, nitro coffee and local beer available. Click here for the menu
